A person’s body weight is an important consideration in finding the mattress that will help them get the best sleep possible. Unfortunately, sleepers over 230 pounds have found that many mattresses fail to provide the performance that they need.
The Big Fig mattress was designed specifically to solve this problem. The name Big Fig, short for Bigger Figure, is thoughtfully engineered with special components to offer comfort, support, resilience, and durability for people of above-average body weight.
This mattress employes latex, foam, and innerspring coils and comes with a specially-designed foundation to reinforce it from below. Extra foam around the exterior enhances edge support, and the tufted cover keeps material from shifting over time.
With all of these materials backed by a 20-year full replacement warranty, the Big Fig is an exciting mattress option for higher-weight sleepers.

The Big Fig mattress has only one firmness level. It is medium-firm and around a 6.5 on the firmness scale.
This mattress is only available directly from Big Fig on their website.
The Big Fig mattress is composed of 5 layers. The top four layers are foam and have a combined thickness of 3.5”.
The top layer is gel-infused and ventilated latex with an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 20.
The second layer is polyfoam with a density of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot (PCF).
The third layer is polyfoam with a density of 1.8 PCF.
The fourth layer is polyfoam with a density of 2.5 PCF.
The fifth layer is 7” of pocketed innerspring coils with 15 gauge wire.
A foam layer with 80 ILD — in other words, a very firm foam — surrounds the exterior of the mattress to provide buttressed edge support.
The top cover has tufted quilting that keeps material in place and reduces the risk of the bed forming body impressions.
The foundation of the Big Fig mattress is made with spruce wood and has 2 center rails with 18 slats that are 2.5” wide. This design provides greater strength and durability compared to more basic foundations.
Unlike many other online mattresses, the Big Fig mattress is not compressed for shipping as a bed-in-a-box. When delivered, it arrives already at its full size.
Standard delivery of the Big Fig mattress is available free of charge. This includes the mattress being brought just inside the first door of your home. If you live in an apartment building, the company will bring the mattress into your actual apartment.
White glove delivery includes setting up the mattress in a room of your choosing. The fee for this service is $99.
Removal of an old mattress can be combined with the white-glove installation service. Setup of your new mattress plus haul-away of an old mattress costs $159.
Big Fig offers a 120-night sleep trial. The company requires that you keep the mattress for a minimum of two weeks. After those first two weeks, you can return the mattress for a full refund within the 120 night period. Big Fig will come to pick up the mattress at no charge to you if you decide to return it.
The Big Fig mattress and foundation are backed by a 20-year full replacement warranty. This warranty is not prorated, so if there is a defect in the mattress or foundation during those 20 years, the company will replace it for free.
Big Fig Mattress Performance
Motion isolation is very good on the Big Fig mattress. The foams are able to maintain their overall shape and integrity while at the same time accommodating sleepers of a higher body weight. This keeps motion on one part of the Big Fig from being felt on other areas.
Thanks to the high-ILD foam used to provide reinforcements for the outside of the bed, the Big Fig provides considerably more edge support than the vast majority of mattresses. This foam reinforcement works in tandem with the innerspring coils to prevent the edge from collapsing even with users of a higher weight.
By using a top layer of gel-infused and ventilated latex, the Big Fig avoids heat retention issues that can arise for many foam beds. The support core of innerspring coils also works to resist heat buildup.
Very little off-gassing or smell occurs with the Big Fig because it is not compressed for delivery. The materials may have a slight scent from being brand new, but this will go away rapidly.
The Big Fig provides above average support, especially for sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.
Many sleepers with a bigger figure find that other mattresses fail to deliver when it comes to support. Often mattresses are designed with lower-weight sleepers in mind, and the materials sag or compress too much when used by someone with a higher weight.
The Big Fig avoids this through its layering of latex, strong polyfoams, and pocketed innerspring coils. These materials work together to help cushion the body in the areas that most require it, and that can keep the spine aligned as you sleep.
The Big Fig provides moderate contouring, especially around the heavier parts of the body that need extra support. However, it is designed to prevent abundant sinking into the mattress.
Customers should expect a significant useful life of at least 6-8 years from the Big Fig mattress.
This mattress is built to withstand considerable pressure through the combination of materials in its layers. Extra edge support reduces the risk of the bed wearing out disproportionately along its exterior.
The reinforced foundation that comes with the mattress ensures the bed gets the underlying base that it needs to avoid wearing out quickly.
The use of latex and innerspring coils both contribute to enough bounce in the mattress to hedge against interruptions to your sex life.
What Type of Sleeper is Suited to the Big Fig Mattress?
The Big Fig mattress was designed with larger people — those with bigger figures — in mind. Not surprisingly, sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds often find that this bed is an excellent fit for their support and comfort needs.
Sleeping position is another consideration in evaluating whether this mattress is likely to work for you.
Side sleepers: with its medium-firm feel, this mattress is an excellent choice for side sleepers over 230 pounds. Side sleepers under 230 pounds may find that the design of this bed offers a sleeping surface that is a bit too firm to properly cushion their pressure points.
Back sleepers: the Big Fig is a good choice for back sleepers of any weight because of its resistance to over-compression. This allows it to keep the spine supported without excessive sinking around the shoulders or abdomen.
Stomach sleepers: stomach sleepers of any weight can find the Big Fig to be comfortable and adequately supportive; however, for many it may be too soft as stomach sleepers typically do best with a firmer mattress.
|Under 130 lbs||130-230 lbs||Above 230 lbs|
|Side Sleepers||Fair||Good||Very good|
|Back Sleepers||Good||Good||Very good|
While the number of online mattress options has taken off over the past few years, few, if any, of those new mattresses were designed to align specifically with the needs of people of a higher body weight. The Big Fig mattress corrects this issue and offers an important option for these sleepers.
The inclusion of a latex comfort layer, heavier-duty foams, and powerful innerspring coils are all part of this bed’s design to make sure that heavier sleepers get the support they need for proper spinal alignment. At the same time, these design elements resist heat buildup and motion transfer.
Another big plus for the Big Fig is its reinforced edges and its included foundation. These added benefits help resolve common issues that heavier sleepers have with many other beds.
Built for comfort and durability, the Big Fig is backed by a 20-year full replacement warranty that lets you sleep easy knowing that the company has your back, literally and fig-uratively.
